5 Things To Consider Before You Sign A Rental Lease

Posted on

Renting property can be a great way to get a place to live or work without having to fork over the costs associated with buying. There are so many great rental properties out there, it just takes a bit of time to explore your options and find the right one for your needs. You want to make sure that you choose to rent a property that is a good fit! Here are some things to consider before you sign a rental lease:

What is the Length of Lease

You want to make sure that you fully understand the commitment that you're making. Many leases are made for a one-year time-period but it's always a good idea to clarify this information. This way you and the landlord are on the same page from the start.

What Money Will You Owe Up Front

When you rent, there are a good bit of upfront costs that need to be considered. For starters, many property owners require tenants to pay a security deposit. This helps to protect the property owner or manager in the event you cause damage to the property. Most security deposits are refundable as long as you care for the property. You may also need to pay the first month's rent right away and some tenants are also responsible for the last month's rent, too. Asking about these costs will help you understand your financial responsibilities before you sign a lease.

Don't Forget to Ask About Monthly Financial Responsibilities

You also want to be clear what money you owe on a monthly basis. For example, many rental properties require tenants to pay for their utilities. Other rentals include some utility costs in with the rental price. Be sure to ask your landlord what utilities or added costs you're responsible for like parking or garbage collection fees.

What Are Your Neighbors Like

Take a look around the area where you'll be living to get a feel for the neighborhood. You want to make sure that you'll feel comfortable living here. You can also ask whether other tenants live in your building or nearby.

How Are Maintenence Requests Handled

You also want to check into how maintenance requests are handled. If something breaks or you need assistance, you want to make sure that the property manager will be willing and ready to help.

You can find great real estate for lease. Take time comparing options, visit properties in person, and ask plenty of questions!
